What Do I Do With All My Parents Stuff?
Few questions create more stress for families than this one.
"What do we do with all the stuff?"
Whether your parents are moving to senior living, downsizing, moving closer to family, or aging in place, belongings are often one of the biggest sources of anxiety.
The reality is that most families are not dealing with "stuff."
They're dealing with memories, family history, and decades of life experiences.
Start With the Move, Not the Belongings
One mistake families make is trying to evaluate every item before understanding the destination.
Start by asking:
Where is your parent moving?
How much space will they have?
What furniture will fit?
What belongings are most important to them?
Once you know what is going to the new home, decisions about everything else become easier.
Most Items Fall Into Five Categories
As families downsize, belongings generally end up in one of five places:
Moving to the new home
Staying with family members
Being donated
Being sold
Being recycled or discarded
Creating these categories often makes the process feel more manageable.
Remember Who Gets to Decide
Whenever possible, older adults should remain at the center of decision-making.
The goal is not to clear a house as quickly as possible.
The goal is to help someone transition in a way that reflects their values, priorities, and wishes.
