What Is My Artwork Worth? Questions We Hear During Downsizing and Estate Cleanouts
Artwork is one of the most misunderstood categories we encounter.
Families often inherit paintings, prints, sculptures, pottery, and framed artwork that have been hanging on walls for decades.
Naturally, one of the first questions is:
"Is this worth anything?"
The honest answer is: sometimes.
Most artwork has value primarily as decoration. Some pieces have modest resale value. A smaller number may have significant value depending on the artist, provenance, condition, and demand.
The challenge is that it can be difficult for non-experts to tell the difference.
That's why we encourage families not to throw artwork away and not to assume it's valuable either.
When questions come up, we can often help connect clients with trusted appraisers, auction professionals, estate sale companies, and specialty buyers who can provide guidance.
For artwork that isn't a fit for resale, donation can be a wonderful option. Schools, nonprofits, theaters, community organizations, and charitable groups are often grateful to receive quality artwork.
Every collection is different.
Our job isn't to tell people what they should do. It's to help them understand their options and connect them with the right resources.
